Wonder Woman and Witchblade Paintings on the Cintiq 22HD

Following my Black Widow painting for my wife’s friend, I had a couple of request to paint them as superheroes as well. Since the subject matter was what I wanted to paint, I ended up doing a couple of commissions on it. I painted them on the Wacom Cintiq 22HD.

Wonder Woman and Witchblade Paintings

Sexy Drawing Wonder Woman CosplayFor this Wonder Woman and Witchblade paintings, the process was similar. I started with their portrait and then I would find a suitable pose for them my reference library. Rarely does the reference matches exactly what I want it to be. But that’s okay because what I’m after are lighting references. I’ll try to figure out the lighting based on any pose changes from the reference. I use to be horrible at this but with practice, I can see that I’m getting better at making things up. Still feels awkward but it’s getting there.

Sexy Drawing Witchblade Cosplay With the Witchblade painting, the portrait was from a flash photo, resulting in flat lighting. I had to change it to what you see here, with the lighting from the side. That was the trickiest part. I’m calling this Witchblade because it was referenced from that character. I played around with it and did my own costume. It’s closer to the Japanese version of Witchblade, Takeru.

If you’re interested in such a painting for yourself, I am open to commissions. It’s not something I’ve done a lot in the past, but now that I’m getting back to painting, I’m more open to the idea. Sexy ladies only. Just contact me.

Painting on the Cintiq – Basil Gogos’ Frankenstein

I wanted to play with colors on the Cintiq and what better than to copy one of Basil Gogos’ monster paintings. The painting is referenced from the book, Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos. I still carry some of them in my store. His monster art is colorful and haunting–just an awesome use of colors. I was only able to capture a fraction of the expression and mood in the original painting.

You learn a lot by copying other people’s art. Try it sometimes if you haven’t–it’s worth your time. With close observation, you will start to decipher their art process. In this case, it is a little different as I’m working with a digital medium. But nonetheless, my intense observations of Basil’s painting offers clues to his process. These kinds of exercise is priceless.

Avengers Black Widow and Batman Painting

Sexy Drawing of Avengers Black Widow

Ever since I got my Wacom Cintiq 22HD, I haven’t used anything else to draw or paint. There are so many things I want to paint and experiment with as the painting process is smooth and natural with the Cintiq–as natural as it can be on a computer. I no longer have to struggle with not having hand-eye coordination. If you want to know more about the new Cintiq 22HD. Check out my previous post:
Review of the Cintiq 22HD.

Here’s what I been doing on the Cintiq. This Black Widow painting is based on Brooke Mason, an aspiring model. I don’t know her but her mom, Tamsin, is a friend of my wife. Tamsin has been supportive in my wife’s Pouchy Pals (customized animal plush) hobby. To return the favor, I decided to do a painting of her daughter who is an Avengers fan. I like the way this painting turned out. A beautiful face will always draw the viewer in. The simple red background helps to accentuate her face even more I think.

cintiq painting of Batman, the Dark Knight

Another quick painting is my black and white Batman. I really don’t like the newer Batman designs in the movies. With each Dark Knight movie, the Batman uniform has been more and more heavily armoured. Maybe I’m just old school, but superheroes don’t need armour in my opinion. This is a doodle on the Cintiq on my version of the Batman uniform. Looking at this Batman now, it’s starting to look like a football player=).

I’ve also started on another painting, which is a Frankenstein painting based on Basil Gogos’ art. His use of colors are incredible. I’ll try to replicate some of those vibrant colors in my painting. You can see my initial rough sketch on my Facebook page.

Quick Photoshop Painting of My Eye Drawing

I think by now you know that I can’t leave my drawings as it is anymore=). That eye sketch was just dying for some color in Photoshop. I figure why not make it into a painting video. Anyhow, here is the original eye sketch with the Photoshop painted version. It took me about 45 minutes to paint, which was longer than I anticipated. The hard part was painting the iris, as I wanted to make it look ‘attractive.’ Overall, I think it came out okay. Check it out and see what you think……and do stay for the ending…….

Photoshop Painting of My Pretty Face Drawing

Okay, now she really IS pretty. I thought the previous drawing of the face was pretty, so I posted it up immediately after finishing. Then I realized all the mistakes on her features. Mainly the eyes were too far apart and her cheek area was too elongated. Serves me right to post a drawing up immediately. You always need to step away from your art and see it with a fresh eye after some time has passed. Somehow this escaped me. The mistakes on the features were so immediately glaring with a fresh eye that I had to fix it. And what better ways to fix things than with Photoshop!

Here is the final painting below. It’s a black and white painting. The fully painted area is mostly on the right side of her face. I left it this way because I figure you would like to see the progression or stages of my painting. I always enjoy seeing that in other artist’s work, because it tells a story of their workflow and their thought process. I might finish off the whole face later on, but as it is now, I think she looks very pretty already.

I just love the lips on her, very SEDUCTIVE! It really was what attracted me to draw her in the first place.

The reference image for this drawing was taken from my favorite ‘go to’ reference book for sexy female faces and bodies, the Pirelli Calendar, the Complete Works. I can’t tell you how much this book has helped me during the times when I just needed something to draw. The photography is beautiful and thought provoking, so it keeps my mind from being dull. As an artist, you know how it is. Sometimes you want something to draw but don’t know what. So you look through magazines and books but can’t find anything worthwhile. Then you end up spending a little too much time looking for references that you have lost that ‘initial drive’ to draw. I hate that feeling! This and a few other books I have solves that problem for me.

Below is the video for my painting process on this pretty face. It is another speed painting video, played at 500% normal speed. I’ll just call it warp 5. You can see how easy it is in Photoshop to fix certain things.

Thanks for looking! -Wei
